Millionaire Closets
Interior Designers' Love Affair for Closets and Closet Personalities
I’ve been thinking of how challenging it has been for interior designers these past two years. It is an intimate business and as interior designers we have to get to know our clients.
For me, it helps me understand a potential client by seeing how they live. When I step into a clients closet, I see what colors they are attracted to, and what is their fashion sense. It is a window into their personalities. Are you a hoarder, do you hunt for sale items, do you like organization? Closets tell a lot about a person and immediately I can tell the colors they are attracted to and if they are attracted to luxury items.
In 2021, I had three very nice referrals. Two were from high end architects and one was from a landscape architect. All of us had worked on previous projects together so there was a comfort level already established.
However, in all three referrals I never had a chance to look into the clients’ lifestyles. With the quarantine, we maintained a distance of 6ft and wore masks when in person. One was an international client so we only Zoomed. Although I did do CAD drawings for both his and her closets, I never saw one clothing item. I never like designing for an imaginary person. Of course I have had the pleasure of creating some gorgeous closets and like all of us I have made some mistakes along the way. Tip… be sure to know the size of your clients foot, and be aware of those tricky blind corners.
Some of my favorite ideas are to include pull-out bottom drawers for flats, flip-flops, or just extra hangers. Another great idea is to do a glass top insert so you can see all of your costume jewelry. When you dress, it is a great little luxury to pull out a pin or necklace or an accessory at the last minute for the little pizazz. Display cases and unique storage systems add personality and utility.
I have designed some of the most expensive luxury closets in the world. Closets for millionaires, and even billionaire closets! As an interior designer, it is one of my favorite ways of getting to know my clients and creating a truly memorable and personal space for them. Every fashionista or fashion aficionado deserves the closet of their dreams.
